Chapter 23

Ella

The knights came on like a wave, shouting in some strange tongue. They were outnumbered by a factor of ten, yet they charged fearlessly into the circle of goblins, their swords flashing. Those few that stood to fight were ridden down and the remainder were put to flight and butchered as they ran, screaming.

"Check your men!" Gada shouted to a tall warrior on a great black steed. The man, as the rest of them, wore bright plate mail that had been polished so much that it practically glowed in the night. He wheeled his horse around and threw back his visor so that Ella caught a good look at his face. His hair was blonde and clean, his face shaven. He was handsome despite a nose that had an obvious break in it and a purple scar that ran across his chin and down beneath his armor. Perhaps he would have been handsomer had it not been for his blank look of astonishment.

The sight in front of him must have been something. The four of them, it could not be questioned, were an odd mixture: a dwarf, a fey, a girl, and a man so covered in the detriment of battle that he looked more than half beast. To add to that, on the ground, all about them were the bodies of sixty or so goblins, while in the trees above them lay thirty fairies in various stages of exhaustion.

"Who is it that so orders a captain of the Den?" challenged the rider.

When the knights had first come, Gada threw the shredded remains of his hood over his face and now he pulled it back partially. "I am gada, my Lord Lienhart," he said with his face cast down. "I seek to warn you only. There are more companies of maug about, at least another two hundred."

The captain of the Den clearly recognized Gada despite the blood. "You think I fear a few goblins?" Lienhart's sneer turned his handsome face ugly. "Do not project your cowardice upon me, gada."

So harsh and disrespectful were the man's words that Ella was certain he would see Gada attack him. However, Gada didn't move a muscle and didn't seem the least angry, rather he seemed withdrawn and sad. Aric, looking puzzled, stepped forward, wiping the blood from his blade so that once again it began to shine. "If I may, Lord Den. These maug were being controlled and directed by a demon of some power. He will undoubtedly gather them once more against us and it is not out of the realm of possibility that he may make an appearance as well."

"My thanks for a fair warning, Sir Fey," Lienhart said graciously. He then threw back his head and roared out, "To me, Den!" The riders could be heard turning back the way they came.

Aric made his bow—it was stiff with pain and fatigue. "A pleasure, Lord Lienhart. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Aric Anoria, prisoner of the Den. I
